From Chef Nick Reisini, of Honest Plate:
I love a good bike ride, and I live right on Noyack Road by Cromer's. I love to just go down there, which is incredibly treacherous, and go down to Long Beach and down to the ferry, then into some of those neighborhoods. I find that to be a really nice ride.
I see everybody else going up Brick Hill trying not to get run over, which is no fun. I understand they're trying to do hills and whatever, but I feel like my route is a much nicer, safer ride - less of that oh my god, somebody's going to kill me kind of ride.
Out here in the summertime, it's super dangerous to ride a bicycle most of the time. That's why I feel like this road is great. Long Beach is nice - it's got bike lanes on both sides. You can go onto Long Beach, ride down Long Beach. They do all those big tri events there with all the relays and bike rides.
Then the ride down to the ferry and all the little side roads you can take around there are really, really beautiful. Going into North Haven and just biking up and down streets - you could spend the entire day in there and it's just one beautiful street after another that you would never know existed. A bike's a really nice way to explore that.
Should you be wearing reflective clothing? One hundred percent. Going against traffic? Yep. All the classic things you should be doing on a bike, do them double. Especially the amount of people I see even walking without reflective gear is just insane.
You have to remember that we're not in New York City, and unfortunately there's not one street light out here. You're not getting illuminated by something else. Somebody comes around a corner, they see a black t-shirt in their headlights and they're like, "Is that a person?"
There are a lot of good bike trails, but some of them pop out in random places like people's driveways - I've definitely gotten yelled at for that. But this route from Noyack to Long Beach to the ferry and into North Haven gives you beautiful scenery, safer roads, and endless exploration without the danger of busy traffic.
