Leallo started as a multi-brand store called Gloria Jewel in 2007 after working in retail for years. What made me fall in love with retail was helping women find things that made them feel good. I wanted to create a comfortable environment for shopping in the Hamptons, where some stores can be intimidating. Being open year-round was important to me as a full-time resident because it's vital to be part of the community.
My first store was on the North Fork in Jamesport. We expanded to Bridgehampton in 2008, then Amagansett and Westhampton Beach in 2009. Eventually we decided to focus on our Hamptons stores.
In 2015, we identified a need for a good white t-shirt and tank that wasn't see-through or clingy. With a manufacturing contact in Peru, we created two t-shirts and two tank tops and called it Leallo. I didn't even tell anyone it was our brand at first - just presented it as something new we discovered.
Customer response was great, so we expanded to high-rise sweatpants (unlike the uncomfortable low-rise options that kept falling off the bum) and lightweight sweatshirts. Then we added jersey dresses perfect for wearing from beach to town to home. Our brand became about that moment when you come home from the beach, shower, and want something comfortable but still cute and sexy for entertaining.
In 2019, we opened in Sag Harbor as Sunny to focus more on Leallo. After a year, I realized we were dividing our efforts building three separate brands, so we rebranded everything as Leallo in 2021. Now all stores carry primarily our brand, though Bridgehampton and Amagansett still offer denim for our dedicated customers.
About 70% of our brand is still 100% cotton made in Peru. And we're introducing new fabrics yearly including our own cashmere collection from Asia. We are working with factories in India for cotton canvas and gauze. And we have a new development with an Italian factory thatβs exciting. We only carry natural fibers that feel good and wash well. They are so comfortable on the skin that men try to get into them as well.
