From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
You gotta be careful if you're a good surfer watching Hollywood movies about surfing — they’ll destroy it. They cut from one wave to another that doesn't match, different boards, no leash, no fins. It’s all wrong.
If you want to see real surfing, watch actual surf movies or documentaries. One I always recommend is A View From a Blue Moon. It's about "John John" Florence, one of the best surfers alive.
It’s filmed with super high-end RED cameras, really cinematic, with an incredible soundtrack. Even if you’re not a surfer, you’ll get chicken skin watching it. And if you are, it’s even more incredible because what he's doing is next-level.
I tell my students to watch it so they actually see what surfing is supposed to look like. A lot of people surf but have never really seen good surfing. I say, “Go watch this movie, do some pop-ups on your floor on a towel, and pay attention to what he’s doing.”
If you want to improve your surfing, don’t just get in the water. Watch how the best move. It’ll change how you see every wave.
For over a decade, Salty Sessions has held the only license for Ocean Road's breaks in Bridgehampton.
Founder James McMahon staffs the school with lifeguard-certified pro surfers who speak three languages and teach students from ages 3 to 75+.
Small group lessons, sunrise privates, and summer camps draw families from across the East End.
The reason is simple: safe, fun instruction that adapts to every student's needs.
