Zhou Hongbin is an artist from Xiamen, on the Chinese side of the Taiwan Strait, and near a magical pedestrian-only island called Gulangyu, otherwise known as Piano Island.
The Michele Mariaud Gallery first discovered Hongbin in Beijing and later met up in Xiamen, where she creates wondrous digital photographic pieces while teaching at a university.
Hongbin has been working with Michele Mariaud since 2009, and has produced numerous series over the years, including collages of her swimming pet bunny (a joyous aquatic ballet) as well as colorful prints of ink-injected ice cubes dissolving in water (taken during the pandemic).
From the surreal to the abstract, Hongbin's images are sociological statements, challenging us to live our lives the best we can, even when everything is melting down.
