ORIENT, New York, March 26, 2024 -- Richard Serra, regarded as one the world's best sculptors, passed away at the age of 85.
Born in San Francisco in 1938, the artist began drawing at a young age; trained as a painter at Yale University from 1961 to 1964; and within a couple of years devoted himself to sculpture.
Serra started out creating works from a variety of materials, including rubber, fiberglass, and lead, but he later gained prominence for his towering steel installations.
Below are two videos about Serra from the San Francisco Museum of Art.
One is a 2006 clip, which details the installation of Serra's 235-ton Sequence sculpture. (The piece moved to Stanford University's Cantor Arts Center in 2019).
The second video is Serra answering the question of "why make art?"
