By Kyle Fengler, co-owner of Loaves & Fishes:
The Bridgehampton Inn was built in 1795 by the Corwith family, one of the local farming families in the area (you'll still see their farm stands around the Hamptons).
Over time, the building evolved from a house to a hostel and eventually to an inn.
When my family came upon it in 1993, it had been out of use for quite a while and needed significant restoration. My grandfather was a mason who specialized in restoring old houses, having done considerable work in Sag Harbor. It was a perfect match.
He dedicated himself to breathing life back into the building while keeping it as true to its original character as possible, changing as little as he could. We purchased, renovated, and opened the inn all within that same year.
We currently have 12 rooms, six in the original building and six in the addition we built when we renovated the inn, created the restaurant, and moved the Cookshop.
Every room has distinctive character and personality, each with a different style and aesthetic. The dΓ©cor is somewhat old-school European throughout.
Many rooms feature my grandfather's paintings - he was an avid hobby painter, primarily creating watercolors of Hamptons landscapes, portraits, and nature scenes.
We offer queen rooms, king rooms, and two suites (one in each building). Room 3 is particularly special with the only fireplace (converted from wood to gas for safety), Room 7 has a bright, cheerful aesthetic with a beautiful iris painting, and Room 15 is our wheelchair-accessible room with the largest bathroom.
For any holiday weekend, book as soon as you begin thinking about it. Many of our guests have an annual tradition - they'll stay for the 4th of July, and as they're checking out, they'll immediately book the same dates for the following year.
Labor Day and the 4th of July are particularly quick to fill up. The Hampton Classic Horse Show creates another peak demand period, as does The Bridge, the annual classic car show at the Bridgehampton Club. These signature Hamptons events draw visitors from across the region, filling our rooms months in advance.
