We have a confession to make -- we’re not a fan of old-fashioned Italian deli meats. But we’re always in search of a good sandwich -- and something told us to stop by Faicco’s Italian Specialities, the Italian deli on Bleecker Street in the West Village.
Faicco’s began in Elizabeth Street in 1900 as a pork butcher, migrated to Thompson Street, and then landed in its current location in 40s or 50s, according to the WestView News (which mentioned that New York Times famed food reviewer Craig Claiborne first learned about the shop from James Beard in 1955).
Faicco’s is now known for its sandwiches - particularly its Italian Special hero.
Unexpectedly sweet, smoky, meaty, oily, tangy and chewy, the capicola, prosciutto, and soppressata slices combine to form fireworks of flavor - and, if you’re a meat lover, it’s pork paradise.
We were expecting the sub to be okay (the bread and meats were pre-sliced) and predicted the bread and the expected fixings of shredded lettuce, tomato and roasted peppers would be the stars of this sammy show.
We were wrong.
The bread was decent and the toppings were good – but it’s the towering pile of meat that really shines here.
This is an expensive sandwich at $22 – so share with a friend or loved one. Don’t worry, it’s enough for two.
And while there’s no place to eat in a shop, this is a sandwich that’s meant to be eaten quickly (before it gets soggy) on a park bench or picnic blanket or inside a nearby office or apartment (as long as its yours).
Faicco’s does pack napkins for you, but just to be safe, ask for extras on your way out. You don’t want to be caught licking your fingers … even though you’ll want to.
