Once known as Mogador, Essaouira (pronounced es-sah-WEER-ah) sits on Moroccoβs Atlantic coast, about 2.5 hours west of Marrakesh.
Known as the City of the Wind, its steady Atlantic gusts shape everything β from the sails of kitesurfers in the bay to the rhythm of its annual Gnaoua music festival.
Add whitewashed Medina walls, Portuguese ramparts, seafood stalls β and legends like Jimi Hendrix and Orson Welles spending time here β and youβve got one of Moroccoβs most laid-back coastal escapes.
Essaouira Bay is a magnet for windsurfers and kitesurfers, but if youβre after stronger conditions and more space, head a few kilometers south to Sidi Kaouki or Diabat.
Surfing is also good right in Essaouira outside of summer, with better breaks at Sidi Kaouki (20β25 minutes away) or farther down the coast at Imsouane.
Summer or not, activity or not, pack a light sweater β the evening breeze runs cool here year-round.
