What makes Barryville General different is our philosophy β the taste level that connects a $60 Wrangler jean to a $400 Japanese-made Levi's, or a nostalgic Fluff jar to a non-nut spread.
Barryville General is a very specific general store. That's how we've always thought of the brand β as being a space where you can find a large array of items in different categories: apparel, food, health and wellness products, home goods, experiential opportunities.
The specificity of a general store is just our way of saying we have chosen all of those different things you can interact with, but with intense curation.
After decades of being in the Hamptons, we found a wonderful home in Barryville in upstate New York. Through a strange turn of events, we ended up buying a local 80-year-old food store on the Delaware River. We expanded from a healthy food market to a full general store concept with Jamaican food, concerts, clothes, books, and records.
When our youngest headed to college we returned to the beach, and my wife Sharone felt that Southampton Village needed something new.
Most folks would have seen us in Amagansett or Sag Harbor, but we felt the village was ready for some new energy. So we came here, bringing Sean Naughton β a fashion exec who worked for Ralph Lauren, Levi's, and others β to help us create something truly unique.
We operate from two distinct spaces on the same block. That wasnβt our original vision, but we fell in love with a corner location which was perfect for a clothing shop. It had beautiful original tile floors from 1919 that had been covered for 100 years. Thus, The Market and The Goods Shop emerged as distinct experiences, but with the throughline of our curatorial approach.
From the moment you enter either space, it's not just about the products. Good music is always playing. Movies projected silently on walls, quirky objects everywhere signaling we don't take ourselves too seriously. Our staff genuinely engages because they're happy to be there. It's all part of a sensory experience that's as carefully curated as our products.
The chicken soup that makes people drive across the East End co-exists with a beer collection that beer aficionados whisper about.
A perfect T-shirt designed by us after years of tweaking the fit might be your everyday staple.
Don't rush through either space β the treasures reveal themselves to the curious. Let yourself be surprised.
