The Denim Doctrine at Barryville General 

I've been in the denim industry for so long that I'm very particular with jeans. People come to us looking for guidance on style and fit, and we have a clear philosophy. We don't chase trendy fits, we don't carry stretch jeans — that's where I draw the line. What we offer is really interesting and unique because we're thoughtful about every pair in the store.

Wash & Learn 

Not a lot of companies do washes very well. The most beautiful washes are always the ones created over time by whoever originally owned the jeans. That's why we carry some vintage Levi's — particularly the Made-in-Japan pieces in classic timeline fits, like a 1954 501 or a 1947 501. We're very particular about the washes, and we don't charge a lot for our vintage Levi's — they're around $125, but they're 100% cotton and carefully selected.

The Universal Truth 

In my opinion, a Levi's 501 is something you can't go wrong with. It's proven over the last 150 years that it fits men, women — it looks good on most, if not everybody. Some fits, like the Wrangler cowboy cut, don't work for everyone — they can be quirky and high-waisted. I've helped friends and even my 17-year-old understands that you start with the 501's. Whether you're chasing tapered or wide leg, a good pair of jeans starts there.

Personal Style Comes First 

I appreciate that everybody's got their own style. There's beauty in that. I never assume to understand how people want to look or where they're going. If they'd like some guidance, I'm happy to lend an opinion, but we're all-inclusive here. We're here to support customers and help bring out how they want to look. I'm not a judgmental person, but as my wife could attest, living in New York City, I'm always looking at what people have on their butts!
