From Yogeswari, a senior Jivamukti teacher and founder and president of AZAHAR Foundation:
I have history with Berlin, having lived there from 1978 to 1980, when the wall was still up. It was an enclosed area at the time. When you lived in West Berlin, you felt a very strong sense of intellectualism and culture amongst the backdrop of World War II history.
Berlin was badly damaged by the war, especially East Berlin, which was filled with bullet holes and in much need of repair. That has gone away, the dilapidated East Berlin has become modern and more hip than its western counterpart.
And while true, the whole city is thriving with culture and ideas.
Berlin is simply a really cool city. People from all over Germany and Europe are coming here to enjoy themselves and to dance and to listen to music. It’s exactly like what New York City used to be like in the 80s.
One place to feel connected to the Berlin arts scene is Tanzfabrik, a contemporary dance company that I helped found in 1978.
At Tanzfabrik you’ll find innovative dance and exciting performances as well as classes and instruction.
