From Rory, Kidd Squid Brewing Co, Sag Harbor, NY:
Opties and Dinghies takes its name from two types of boats — fitting, since it started near the Orient boatyard before moving to Shelter Island.
It’s run married couple Vincent Bertault and Claudia Lin, and their restaurant is part dumpling house, part gelato bar. Doesn’t sound like it should work — but it does.
You can’t really get dim sum out here, but this makes up for it: bao, dumplings, small bites, all made with care.
My go-to is the sweet pork bun — big, soft, and completely addictive.
The gelato changes all the time, but anything with peanut (like chocolate peanut butter) is a safe bet for me.
Opties and Dinghies also bake bread and pour wine and beer — and the space is just simple and good.
Inside and out, it feels like Shelter Island should: quiet, fun and relaxed.
Don’t overthink the combo. Dumplings first, gelato after. Sweet + savory = perfect.
