From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
As a surfer, my goal is to be in the best place to catch the best waves possible, wherever I am in the world.
If I'm in Europe, I'm waking up pre-dawn at the beach at the spot I've researched that I know will be on that day.
I do that all year until I come back here to work hard, make money, and give myself the freedom to chase that dream.
It’s hard to explain to someone who’s not fully passionate about it.
The closest comparison is a gambling. There’s always that chance you’ll hit the jackpot and get the best day you’ve had in six months.
Catching a really good wave is euphoric. Time slows down. Once you’re at a certain level, you’re chasing very specific moments that can’t be duplicated anywhere else in life.
Inside a wave that’s tunneling and moving around you while you’re moving through it — nothing touches that.
I’ve been in barrels as big as this room. It’s its own animal.
I like heavy waves. Waves of consequence. If it’s just a regular beach with sloppy little waves, I’d rather relax with a beer and friends than pretend to surf. I go for a specific style of water moving.
I’ve found it in places like Bocas del Toro in Panama, Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Supertubos in Portugal, and a secret beach where I bought a house in the south of Spain.
These waves exist, but they’re fickle. You need the right season, the right tide, the right time. When it all comes together, it’s magic.
