From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
Zicatela in Puerto Escondido is one of the best waves in the world, by far. But it’s extremely localized and extremely heavy. This isn’t a wave for everyone.
Luckily, there’s kind of a bay at one end of the beach, so no matter how big it is, you can usually find a spot to paddle out. But with the locals, there’s really no “getting in.” You just have to show respect, stay away from the top dogs, and hope you can snag a wave without stepping on toes.
It’s expert level. Don’t even think about it if you're not close to expert. This is a wave to watch. It breaks close to shore, it’s intense, and you can feel its power just standing on the sand.
People drown there. People die there. It’s not a friendly, mellow, learn-to-surf spot. It’s a wave for real, committed, trained surfers who know what they’re getting into.
If you’re not at that level, head to the south end of the beach to La Punta. It’s got a much softer, easier wave — way more accessible. That area is more laid-back, kind of a hippie vibe. Lots more girls, lots more yoga, and they do surf lessons there.
It’s literally a two-minute cab ride from the top of the beach to La Punta, but it’s a totally different scene. That’s where my wife surfs when we’re down there.
Puerto Escondido is the big town, and Playa Zicatela itself is super gentrified and Americanized in a good way. There are gorgeous restaurants lining the entire beach. Literally one after another. If you’re visiting, I highly recommend staying in that area for the full vibe.
