From Sean Naughton, Barryville General partner and veteran of Lee, Wrangler & Levi's on his East Village neighbourhood spots:
I rave about Superiority Burger. It's one of the best vegetarian/vegan burger joints around — they don't carry meat at all. But I'm a meat eater and I go there thinking, This is fantastic.
Talk about vibe — you walk in there and immediately feel like you're in a genuine East Village joint. And it’s that authenticity is what makes it special. I've brought several friends there in the last couple months – because when people come to New York, they want to feel something, to be part of a neighborhood, not just go to some generic New York-style restaurant.
Recently, my buddy Paul and I had a particularly fun evening there. After dinner, he suggested we walk through Tompkins Square Park, where we found a guy playing guitar. We just sat on a park bench, listening to this experimental folk music. It was such a perfect, unplanned ending to the night before saying goodbye. Those spontaneous New York moments — starting with a great vegetarian burger place — that's what makes the city special.
Superiority Burger is where the old Odessa diner used to stand. Sit at the bar and order their burger with french fries or a vegetable side.
