From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
Not all surf instruction is created equal. Here's our take on three programs worth considering — and what to look for in any school.
First off, there's us. Salty Sessions in Bridgehampton.
We’re locals, we know these beaches, and we keep it professional. Adult instructors, all lifeguard-certified, experienced watermen. We focus on real technique, safety, and making sure you or your kids get true one-on-one instruction in our zone.
If you’re heading to Montauk and want to learn with the locals, I always recommend East End Surf Club run by Pat Fallon. They're the best out there. All the guys grew up surfing those waves. They're semi-pro in their own right, high-quality instructors who know every spot.
What makes them special is you're with the locals, so you're not going to get yelled at by random guys in the lineup. You're with the crew, which is also the best way to make friends out there.
If you’re past Southampton village, way out toward Meadow Lane, check out OC Surf camp. They're run by the O'Connell brothers — locals from that area. Really awesome lessons, high level instruction, very similar vibe to what we do, just further west.
If you're not booking with any of us and you’re checking out another program, ask the right questions. Who’s actually teaching your kids? Are they adults? Are they true watermen?
Do they surf? Are they local? Are they lifeguards? Are they CPR-certified?
You want people who know the area, know the water, and actually care about safety and the quality of the experience.
Don’t just go with the cheapest or the flashiest ad. Ask around, get references, and make sure you’re choosing people who really know what they’re doing.
It’s worth taking the time to get the right fit. The best surf lessons aren’t just about standing up on a board once — they’re about learning skills that keep you safe, confident, and able to enjoy it for life.
