How Jesse, co-owner of Sen restaurant in Sag Harbor, does Tokyo:
Also in Golden Gai, just a short walk from Shampoo, I found Kenzo. At first, I only stopped in because it shares a name with my son.
Turns out, Kenzo-san is a legend. An older, flamboyant Japanese bartender, he’s not just a bar owner, he’s practically the President of Golden Gai. He runs the marketing, the events, the fundraisers... He’s the guy to know.
Kenzo’s spot is tiny, on the second floor, and probably fits six to eight people max. A really cute little space.
He speaks a little English, enough to make sure your experience is fabulous. If you’re looking for an authentic Golden Gai experience, grab a seat and talk to Kenzo-san.
Start at Omoide Yokocho for oysters, and then some whisky at Albatross. Make your way over to Golden Gai, get a cocktail at Shampoo, and end the night at Kenzo’s bar. Super fun spots to check out in Tokyo.
