From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
I really love Brazil. I lived a lot in Rio de Janeiro, and it’s one of my favorite places in the world. If you want to surf in Rio, head to Baja da Tijuca. It’s the most southern part of the city, outside the main bustle. Big, long, beautiful beaches.
North of the city there’s Búzios. It’s kind of like the Hamptons of Rio — about an hour and a half away. It’s this little peninsula with tons of cove beaches, all pointing in different directions. Very safe, beautiful, relaxed vibe.
Both Baja da Tijuca and Búzios have plenty of surf schools. I don’t have a specific school I recommend there offhand, but they’re easy to find.
In Búzios especially, Geriba Beach has surf schools lined up along the sand. Hotels and resorts will also connect you with good instructors.
If you’re a beginner, both Baja and Búzios are great. Super user-friendly beaches. Easy to learn, beautiful setting, welcoming vibe.
If you’re an expert, it’s more nuanced. The heavier, localized waves can get a bit gnarlier with the local crowd. But it can be done.
I lived there and fully integrated into the surf community, felt safe and loved. For me, it was easier to make that work than, say, Hawaii. But everyone’s experience is their own.
