Guild Hall presents Mary Heilmann's first large-scale institutional solo exhibition on the East End, where she has been part of the creative community for decades.
The show brings together over 40 works from the 1980s to present that explore water's influence on her practice. The exhibition includes paintings, ceramics, and works on paper and is free to the public.
Heilmann grew up on the California coast as a competitive diver who was immersed in surf culture. She moved to New York in 1968 and now maintains studios in the city and Bridgehampton.
She translates waves into geometric patterns and uses light from the ocean to inspire her bold color palette.
Her work is autobiographical, and she gives her abstract pieces titles that hint at the personal stories behind them.
The galleries are open from 12-5 PM, Wednesday through Sunday.
The exhibition is organized by Melanie Crader, Museum Director and Curator of Visual Arts, with Philippa Content, Museum Manager and Registrar, and Claire Hunter, Museum Coordinator and Curatorial Associate.
