The Shelf Life

I was in Port Jefferson and had some time to kill before getting on the ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut. Not expecting to find anything, I searched Google Maps to see if there was a bookstore in the vicinity--and I was quite pleased to find Global Language Reads, right up the street from the ferry terminal.

All independent bookstores have a certain personalty--this one felt very much like being in someone's living room. (Someone smart and interesting, that is.) There was a surprisingly and impressively large collection of science books. There was an enormous selection of Agatha Christie hardcovers. There was an adorable little children's nook in the back, perfect for young readers to relax and enjoy. There are best sellers and classics, and many books in a variety of languages --it's a perfect place for treasure hunting.

I quickly learned that GLR books has a sister location in Brooklyn, and that the two shops had a good number of special events--and not just the typical author visits (as terrific as those can be), but a regularly scheduled philosophy club, a kids' science club, open mikes, a language club, and piano lessons.

Check this place out for a friendly, eclectic vibe, interesting cultural happenings, good conversation, and of course, a wide selection of books for your reading pleasure.
