A favorite of Chef Cleon of Page Restaurant:
Elizabeth Alexandra Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Noyac has become my quiet sanctuary when I need to reconnect with nature. Here, my family and I walk the trails, feed the local birds, and enjoy time together.
The experience begins at a parking area that welcomes visitors without fees or permits. From there, a short five-minute walk leads to the main trail system. I typically turn right upon entering, following a dirt path that loops through woodlands.
Afternoons bring a gentle flow of visitors that creates just the right atmosphere - having a few people around makes the experience more pleasant. It creates a sense of community.
After completing the loop, we walk to a peaceful beach area where we often conclude our visits. This combination of forest and shoreline in one compact location makes Morton particularly special - a place where different natural environments converge into a satisfying outdoor experience.
The reserve is open a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset.
Consider bringing a small picnic to extend your stay and fully absorb the calming environment.
