The House Like No Other

First stop is Casa Batlló. The farsighted owners of this property wanted a house like no other, and that's exactly what they ended up with in 1906. The family lived there for many years, but in 1954 the building was purchased by an insurance company and used as office space—which is rather hard to imagine, looking back. In any case, now it's a beautiful historic site: curves, mosaics, imagery suggesting a dragon, a gorgeous rooftop with a delightful view.

There’s also a 360-degree experience by new media artist Refik Anadol called Gaudí Dreams, full of dizzying imagery (quite literally—some people prefer to sit on the floor).

Nature, Mosaic, and Movement

Next stop, a bus ride to Park Güell. Originally part of a housing development that was commercially unsuccessful, it is, instead, a beautiful public space—full of nature-inspired design, unique tiles, mosaics, and unusual beauty. No wonder that Gaudí himself lived there until his death in 1926.

The Crown Jewel of Barcelona

Last and best of all, the Sagrada Família. Still under construction, it is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world, and utterly flamboyant in style: a mixture of gothic and modern, with grand facades, a riot of symbols—it’s creative, exuberant, and unlike anything else.
