Fun fact, I’m a die-hard fisherman. Two hours every night during the summer. I surf cast — and do saltwater fly fishing too. On the ocean. I’ve got a stripping basket, like a little bucket around my waist, and that’s where the line lies in.
I usually head out from Sagg Main Beach, then go west or east depending on the night. Best time to fish is nighttime or early morning. I’m not a morning person though. I usually head out after putting my wife and daughter to bed — so like 10 or 11— and fish until late. Then I kind of force myself to go home, often at 3 a.m.
There’s a local surfcasting scene in the Hamptons – and they’d be into having other people join. For serious surfcasting action — and a real local experience — start at Sagg Main after 10 pm and then find your spot. And if you're curious about the pros, look up Bill Wetzel. Total legend.
Season starts now.
The card was written by Hamptons resident Robin Mueller, a television director of photography and the co-owner of five Long Island restaurants: Alpina, Green Hill Kitchen, and Anker in Greenport and Alpina Swiss Bakery and Hampton Kitchen in the Hamptons.
