A recommendation from Eric Peele, of Page restaurant:
Prestigious Heritage
Montauk Downs stands proudly among America's top 50 public golf courses, boasting an impressive pedigree. The legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr, and later his son Robert Rees Jones, oversaw the redesigns and contributed to its evolution.
What makes the Downs truly special is how every hole was meticulously designed with Montauk's coastal winds in mind. The layout brilliantly incorporates this natural element, positioning holes so you're either playing against the wind or with it at your back.
And every hole has a challenge, whether you know it or not. Strategically placed sand traps, narrow fairways, and water hazards. It’s basically as close to a private course as you’re going to get.
The 14th hole may be my favorite dastardly hole. An elevated tee to an elevated green with nothing but sloping. The 7th hole, with a pond in your way, I don’t mind. I’ve birdie’d that hole before.
