A Medium for Meaning

When I started doing limited editions, I loved that scarves could be a storytelling tool. Every collection is a story. It’s not just what you see or touch — people respond to the meaning behind it.

I tell them the story, and they connect to it.

From Dragonflies to Soulmates

My most recent collection was Dragonfly. For me, the dragonfly symbolizes freedom.

Another one is called A Thousand Flowers, an homage to the Lady and the Unicorn.

I told a customer in Connecticut about a design with two butterflies facing each other. It’s called Soulmate. She immediately thought of a friend of hers. That kind of moment matters.

Usually when you see butterfly drawings they are spread open, or if they are closed, perched on something. You almost never see butterflies drawn that way, facing each other. That’s where the next collection is going — deeper into that idea.

Mont Kiji’s latest collaboration with American artist Kesia Finley taps into deep memory and emotion. Born during the pandemic at a tiny kitchen island, Kessia’s art began as a response to grief—and evolved into haunting, horse-filled dreamscapes inspired by the wild American West she once called home. Some elements are drawn by hand, others on the computer. I put it all together myself. I’m not a technical person, so I’m learning all the time.

Junhee Kim is the Paris-based founder and designer behind Mont Kiji, a silk scarf brand with a 100% Made-in-France ethos. Before launching her brand, she worked at Balenciaga, Emmanuel Ungaro, Sonia Rykiel, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Mont Kiji scarves are produced with traditional silk artisans in Lyon and small ateliers in Paris, supported by a nonprofit collective Junhee co-founded to uplift independent designers.

Her boutique is in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where she continues to connect with customers through artful objects, expat spirit, and meaningful design.
