For over four decades, Sybille van Kempen has helped shape one of the Hamptons' most beloved institutions.
As owner of Loaves & Fishes Foodstore with her daughter Karina Forrest serving as manager, she carries forward a family legacy that began when her mother Anna Pump opened the Sagaponack market in 1980.
Today, Sybille's passion for real food made from scratch continues to define every dish that leaves their kitchen ā from the legendary curry chicken salad to that irresistible molten brownie pudding.
Her philosophy is simple: fresh ingredients, weekly menu changes to keep things exciting, and a deep connection to the community that has supported them through three generations.
We asked Sybille to share her favorite Hamptons haunts, travel memories, and the stories behind 45 years of feeding the East End. Her answers reveal someone who finds great joy in food, family, and the Hamptons.
What is your favorite memory or story from Loaves & Fishes? What would you want readers to take away from it?
I've been a passionate owner for over 45 years, there are more beautiful memories, and funny stories to consider, than would fill a book!
My earliest proud memory was when my mother offered me an equal partnership, a few years after graduating from cooking school, and successfully developing our growing catering business.
Other than Bridgehampton Inn and Loaves & Fishes, what is your favorite restaurant in the Hamptons?
My husband, Gerrit, and I enjoy lunch at Pierre's, such a constant in our delicious community, it feels as if we are on vacation, even on a work day.
We have been dining at Almond since their beginnings, and absolutely adore them all.
We also love The Ram's Head Inn and Sunset Beach restaurant on Shelter Island, a romantic step outside our immediate community.
Your favorite activity?
We have always owned Great Danes, and walk them for miles every morning, in our beautiful setting š¾š¾
Any inside tips for shopping on the East End?
Shop locally as much as possible, in every category. The personal connection gives so much added value.
Do you have a special cause and why?
We generously donate to those in need in our community, and hold ARF dear for their untiring work.
Wonder Shuffle also loves covering travel beyond the Hamptons and NYC.
What is your all-time favorite city?
London, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, the Tuscany region, and San Francisco, our visits are often motivated by family get togethers, but food is always on the top of our daily priorities:)
Do you have perfect beach or sunset spot? What makes it special?
On a sailboat, returning to Sag Harbor, after a perfect evening with friends and family aboard!
A favorite ski town and slope?
We have been skiing at Jiminy Peak, in Massachusetts, for 40 years, and stay at their lodge at the base of the mountain.
What is the best meal you've ever had?
I have dined and dined, there are so many spectacular meals in my heart that I can recall for a moment of bliss. I suggest living to eat!
Other than a cookbook, what is your favorite book or movie?
Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy, I read it for the first time during the final week of my third pregnancy, and after being blessed with two beautiful boys, that particular story influenced me to name my daughter Karina.
