Saturday, August 9 from 10 AM to 3 PM, Atlantic Avenue Beach hosts the 34th Annual Sandcastle Contest.

Registration opens at 10 AM ($10 per group, limit 6 people), final judging at 3 PM. Rain date: August 10.

The Origin Story

In 1987, architect Rossetti Perchik moved back from Tulsa, where he'd witnessed a sandcastle contest on the Arkansas River. His thought: how does the East End — with some of the world's best beaches — not have one?

Five years later, the first contest by the Clamshell Foundation launched.

Thirty-four years on, it's still $10 to enter, still free to watch, still bringing out everyone's inner architect.

The Rules of Engagement

 • Sculptures can only be made of local, natural materials.

 • Leave the power tools at home.

 • Stay clear of lifeguard stands and dunes.

 • All ages and abilities welcome.

 • This is democratic creativity at its finest.
