From James McMahon, of Bridgehampton’s Salty Sessions:
Surfers are all different animals. Personally, mornings are light for me — just coffee and a smoothie. If I’m going surfing for myself, I’ll leave the smoothie in the car, surf three hours, drink it when I get out.
When I’m working, I’ll do coffee in the morning, make a smoothie and a sandwich.
I burn so many calories all day I try to pack in protein and carbs afterwards so I don’t fade away. Eggs, ham, chicken, pasta. I’m from an Italian family, so there’s always pasta in the mix. Fish. I eat pretty clean. Organic fruits and vegetables, nothing processed if I can avoid it.
Honestly, I make mine at home. I don’t really shop around here — everything’s insane. But there are plenty of posh markets out here with good options.
Provisions in Sag Harbor has what you need. It used to be really core Sag Harbor, but it's changed over time. Still, they have all the essentials and supplements.
A lot of my clients have private chefs or shop at Round Swamp, Citarella, Loaves & Fishes — those tiny, high-end markets with top-quality food. I end up eating a lot of that too because clients bring it to us at the beach. Some of those sandwiches are amazing — but you’ll pay a lot for one.
There are more classic spots too. Cromer’s is the local deli across the street from me. Mickey B’s is right by Ocean Road where we work. Not as posh, but real.
If you’re ready to carb up after a session, Sag Harbor alone has amazing food. Lulu’s is one of my favorites for a rare date night. Incredible mussels, lamb chops, pasta, wine — everything top.
Arthur & Sons in Bridgehampton does a Diablo rigatoni that’s really good. Dopo is solid for pasta. The Beacon has the best lobster pasta you’ll find — no, not mac and cheese, real lobster pasta.
Bell & Anchor is right across the street from my house in Sag Harbor. Great food, and they make my favorite drink, the "Bell-vadier" - their take on the classic boulevadier cocktail.
