For us, there are two reasons to go to John’s Drive-In in Montauk.
The first is that the restaurant, which opened in 1967, evokes memories of the 1970s and 80s with a particular smell of fry grease and burgers that we haven’t sensed since driving to roadside stands with our grandparents decades ago.
The second is that John’s Drive-In is making some seriously good milkshakes with its homemade ice cream.
The frosty drinks are expensive ($9.90), cash only and small in size, but they are delicious and surprisingly filling.
The Oreo flavors – original, mint, fudge, banana, coffee and pumpkin – are the crowd favorites here.
If you like milkshakes and Oreo cookies – and have some pocket money to spare – make a stop here.
TIP: Sample before you order. We almost ordered a Banana Oreo shake, and while we liked the ice cream, we made a better decision by going with the original instead.
NOT TO BE CONFUSED with the equally awesome John’s Pancake House nearby. See that card below.
