A favorite activity of Eric Peele, of Page restaurant:
Camp Hero carries a fascinating historical significance that it was a part of the Manhattan Project back in the day.
The site has inspired numerous conspiracy theories, including rumors that it served as inspiration for the popular show Stranger Things. Much like the nearby Plum Island, speculation about classified research conducted at Camp Hero continues to circulate among locals and visitors alike.
The remaining radio towers stand as evidence to those who believe.
Beyond its mysterious history, it’s a really fun hike. You can take the 50 steps or so down to the ocean. And you can swim there as well. Locals know about it but I’d say it’s a hidden gem.
