From Rory, Kidd Squid Brewing Co, Sag Harbor, NY:
My stepdad Gordon would plan these curated pub walks when I visited London. One of his favorite spots was The Trafalgar Tavern. Another time we went to The Prospect of Whitby.
I won’t say we always agreed on which pubs were the best, but The Trafalgar Tavern on the southside of the Thames from Canary Wharf is a great excuse to include the Greenwich Foot Tunnel as part of your walk.
Built by Alexander Binnie in the 1800s, it’s a pedestrian tunnel under the Thames. It’s about 12 feet wide and brick-lined — kind of like a subway. There’s a spiral staircase on both ends. My wife Grainne wouldn’t do it — too claustrophobic — but I thought it was awesome.
Yes, there are elevators on either end if you don’t want to take the spiral staircase. Trafalgar Tavern is just a 5 minute walk along the Thames from the south entrance of the tunnel.
